An Interactive Lesson on Phonemes & Minimal Pairs
A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a language that can distinguish one word from another. Think of them as the building blocks of spoken words.
For example, the words "cat" and "bat" are different because of one phoneme: the first sound. In "cat" it's /k/, and in "bat" it's /b/.
Minimal pairs are two words that are pronounced almost identically, except for one single phoneme.
Studying minimal pairs is a great way to train your ears to hear the subtle differences between English sounds. Let's practice!
Listen for the difference between "ship" and "sheep".
